If you have never tried breathwork or sound healing before, it is normal to feel a little curious and a little unsure. Maybe a friend told you about a session that changed something for them. Maybe you saw a photo of a room full of people lying on mats surrounded by bowls and drums and wondered what actually happens in there.
I have been leading breathwork and meditation every week for over 11 years, and I still remember my own first time. So here is an honest look at what a first session with All Heart feels like, from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave.
An ancient practice, offered in a simple way
Breath has been used as a doorway inward for thousands of years. Traditional pranayama, Taoist breathwork and Qi Gong all teach that the way we breathe shapes the way we feel. Sound has an equally long history, from temple bowls and gongs to the drum that sits at the heart of so many cultures. Modern nervous system science is now helping explain what these traditions have known for a long time.
In our sessions we bring these practices together in a way that is grounded and welcoming. You do not need any experience, any special beliefs or any flexibility. You just need to show up and be willing to breathe.
When you arrive
You will be welcomed into the space, find a spot and get comfortable. Most people lie on a yoga mat with a blanket and a pillow, and some prefer to sit. Wear something comfortable and bring water.
Before we begin, I share what we will be doing and why. I will walk you through the breathing technique, talk about what you might feel, and remind you that you are always in charge of your own experience. You can slow down, pause or simply rest at any point. There is no right or wrong way to do this.
The breathwork
Every session is different, and I tailor the practice to the group and the room. Some journeys are calming and restorative, using slow, steady breathing to settle the body. Others are more energizing, using a fuller, rhythmic breath that builds over time.
During a more active breathwork journey, people commonly notice tingling in the hands or face, waves of warmth or coolness, emotion rising and moving through, or a deep sense of stillness. All of that is normal. My role is to guide the rhythm, keep the space safe and help you come back gently when the active breathing ends.
The sound
Sound is often woven right into the breath. I use crystal and Tibetan bowls, gong, chimes, Native American flutes, ocean drum and thunder drum. Some moments are soft and spacious. Others build with drumming that helps carry the breath. Toward the end, the sound usually becomes a deep resting place where you can simply receive.
A lot of people tell me this is the part where their mind finally gets quiet for the first time in a long time.
Movement and integration
Many of our longer experiences also include gentle somatic movement drawn from yoga and tai chi. It helps the body wake up before the breath, and it helps you land afterward. We close with a few minutes of rest and, when it feels right, a chance to share. You never have to speak if you would rather not.
I believe transformation has to be experienced, not just explained. That is why the sessions are built as a journey that takes you deep within and mirrors the journey of life itself, through the inner and outer landscapes we all move through.
How you might feel afterward
Most people leave feeling lighter, calmer and more connected to themselves. Some feel energized. Some feel tired in a good way and sleep deeply that night. Drink water, eat something nourishing and give yourself a little space before jumping back into a busy schedule.
A note on safety
Breathwork is gentle for most people, but more active styles are not right for everyone. If you are pregnant, have a heart condition, epilepsy, high blood pressure, a history of seizures or a serious mental health condition, let me know before the session so we can choose a gentler practice. When in doubt, check with your doctor. Every session I lead is trauma informed, and you are always welcome to take it slow.
